In the previous article, we discussed how credit reports are increasingly being used to determine if job applicants have the proper judgment skills and responsibility level required for the positions they are applying for.

If you’ve ever been told by a hiring department for a correctional officer job that your credit report is an area of concern they may have even told you what the issues were but not how you can fix them.

Well if you’ve already heard this or what to avoid your credit history from becoming a problem during the correction officer hiring process below are some steps that you can take to rectify your situation and be on the road to financial recovery.

Request Your Credit Reports

The best thing you can do and where you should probably start is to get a free copy of your credit report from all three of the major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and Transunion.

Contact all three directly or you can take advantage of programs online that provide free credit reports.  Without obtaining your credit reports you won’t know exactly how bad your situation, what steps you should take, and how to explain your situation if asked by a hiring department.

Consider Debt Consolidation

If you find yourself under a mountain of debt and it seems too much for you to handle, you might want to consider utilizing the services of a debt consolidation company.

While debt consolidation offers some assistant by lowering your interest rates and payments, it should be used with a complete plan of action, otherwise, you might find yourself back in the same situation months down the road.

Credit Repair Services

So exactly how can you fix your credit? Well, this is something that you can be done on your own if you have the time, resources and expertise to do it, which many of us do not, or you can obtain the services of a company that specializes in credit repair and set back and wait for the results to happen.

Now everyone’s credit situation is different, and with that said every credit repair company is different. No one has a magic wand to fix your credit overnight but in some cases, it can be done rather quickly provided you submit all of the required information on time.

Credit repair is a legal and great service to those of us who have used it in the past. Even if you don’t have bad credit, using a credit repair agency can make your credit report that must better be removing the inaccuracies that we all have on our credit reports.

Shop around and compare the available credit repair agencies to see which one will fit your situation the best and can provide the results you need within the timeframe you have to work with. The costs for these services vary, but many provide a guarantee on the services they provide so that is a plus for those hesitant on using these services. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Credit Counseling Services

Many credit counselors are non-profit and provide there many of their services at little or no cost. One of the better credit counseling agencies out there, in my opinion, would be Apprisen, you can find out more at their website, www.apprisen.com.

When looking for a reputable credit counselor, make sure that they are recognized members of an approved agency.  Groups like the AICCCA or the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies or NFCC, the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.

No matter what plan of action you choose, pick something, do something, and change something. Doing nothing will only make your situation worst as time passes and what may be a small problem now will only turn into a bigger problem later on.
