Minimum requirements to be a Correctional Officer for the Maryland Department of Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) are as follows: a citizen of the United States or resident alien, at least 21 years old, and have a high school diploma or GED.
You will also need to be able to pass a background investigation, oral interview, and physical examination.
As part of the hiring process, a supplemental questionnaire is required with your application.
You are asked to indicate your willingness to agree to various conditions in the following areas: employment and training, general working conditions, physical tasks, and interactions with inmates, safety and health precautions, and other duties. Additional requirements for a Correctional Officer employee include: provide a phone number, at your own expense, where you can be reached 24/7; periodically be able to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to safely use and take care of firearms; be subject to substance abuse testing.
If you meet the minimum requirements, pass the tests, and complete the hiring process, your name will be placed on an employment list as eligible for at least two years. Qualified candidates will be classified into three groups: best qualified, better qualified, or qualified.
The Police and Correctional Training Commissions (PCTC) Correctional Entrance Level Training Program is a six-week course where you will learn things like defensive tactical training, firearms instruction, riot control, and physical fitness training.
