Correctional Officer Requirements for Hawaii


The state of Hawaii’s Department of Public Safety directs its inmate correctional efforts through its Corrections Division.

The Corrections Division currently maintains 4 jails, 3 prisons, and 2 correctional center facilities throughout the various islands of Hawaii.

Individuals that wish to begin their career as a corrections officer should be of good moral character, have strong interpersonal skills, be able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form, and be able to interact with a diverse group of people.

The basic requirements that you should meet in order to obtain an entry-level position within the Corrections Division include the following:

  • High School Diploma or related equivalent
  • Valid Driver’s License at the time of application
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Submit to Drug Screening & Intensive Background Check

The Corrections Division also conducts examinations for various positions within their department during recruitment based on an evaluation and rating of your education and experience history. Make sure the information that you have provided in your application is clear, concise, and accurate descriptions of the duties and responsibilities for each of your previous positions held.

    I’m a correctional officer in Texas for 8 years. I’m 52 years old. Can I transfer my training to Hawaii.
